Meet Percy!
Percy was a project of mine for one of my final university assignments. The task was to produce a piece of media that followed the design / aesthetic of an already existing product. For mine, I chose Genshin Impact.
The initial idea I had for him was that he was an inventor of some sort. With the world already set and fleshed out, I just had to figure out where he would fit in with it all. Genshin Impact characters have control over one of the seven elements in the game, through a device known as a 'vision'. Because Percy is an inventor, I thought that 'geo' would fit him best, which is the control over the element of earth. The reason why I thought this fit him is because geo characters often have 'constructs' that they summon to help them in combat; so if Percy likes to invent and create new things, this would be a way to inform the player of that through his abilities.
Likewise, because of his element I chose a very earthy colour palette. This is used to inform the player on what element he likely is before they look at his vision. I did dabble in the idea of him being a hydro (water) user instead, hence why in some of the variations the colour blue was used. The region Percy is from is called Fontaine, which is based off of France and is hinted at to be very steampunk themed. This region currently isn't out yet, but using the hints that we've been given I designed Percy's outfit to be based off of steampunk aesthetics. With the theme in mind and wanting to avoid him being too similar to another character (Zhongli, who has a heavily earth themed palette and similar silhouette in terms of clothing); I skewed his colours to lean closer to the red hues of browns rather than yellow. This is why he has cog patterns along some parts of his clothing, in order to fit that steampunk theme.
